Dance Like No One is Watching Grandma - 10 Healthy Benefits to Zumba

I used to go to the gym 3 times a week before some health issues sprung into my life and then the pandemic. Now let me explain that I was not spending time in the weight room. Maybe I should have, but I wasn't. I am being totally transparent here. I was taking Zumba classes. I love to dance and this is such a fun way to burn some calories and get your heart pumping. I looked forward to every class. You are having so much fun that it doesn't feel like exercise at all and the health benefits are worth every step.

Zumba was created by Columbian dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez during the 1990's. It was designed as a combination of Salsa and Aerobics. The music and atmosphere of a Zumba class is high energy and addicting. Some of the routines can be intimidating but you don't have to follow every move perfectly as long as you keep moving. You are never going to look like the instructor so don't even try. You might put your hip out of place. There is no right or wrong way to do it and you can go at your own pace. Most of the routines are repetitive so once you learn a few moves, you are good to go. If you miss a step just shake your bootie and catch up when you can.

Here are 10 health benefits ZUMBA provides:

  • It is fun! The more you enjoy your exercise the more likely your are to stick with it.

  • Zumba involves movement of the entire body - you will get a full body workout that doesn't feel like work.

  • You can burn 300 - 700 calories while having fun.

  • Builds endurance and balance.

  • Lowers cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

  • Reduces stress. Losing yourself in a dance routine and unplugging from daily life is a great way to reduce stress.

  • Provides a fun and positive workout experience that is adaptable for almost any age and fitness level.

  • Improves cardiovascular fitness and lowers blood pressure

  • Melts belly fat.

  • You get to listen to great music and "dance like no one is watching".

My gym is currently open but I am still not ready to go back in physically. They offer Zoom classes and there are so many Zumba classes at every level available on social media. I was obviously a little rusty when I started back with some of the online classes, but it didn't take me long to remember why I loved it so much. If you love music and dancing, this might be the perfect workout routine to help you get started on your road to a healthier lifestyle. It will get your heart pumping and your joints moving. Oh, and it is really fun!!

Happy Dancing!
